My lovely Dad has passed away 1 2

I have been reading the extremely informative forum avidly for a couple of weeks now. My 83 year old Dad had been diagnosed with diabetes in the summer. He was told to control it with diet and he seem to be doing well. However at Christmas my parents were coming to stay with my family. I noticed how jaundiced my dad appeared and he had lost lots of weight. I took him to my local walk-in centre and they sent him straight to hospital. He had a CT scan and was released on Christmas Eve. I took him home after Christmas and we saw his GP who talked about cancer and referred him to a couple of consultants. The Gastroenterologist stated it was advanced PC and as it had spread to…

I joined this forum in August last year and after reading Fifi's post and others tonight ,thought it was about time I posted as I have learned so much from all your posts and have taken comfort knowing I am not alone in this. Our story briefly... My wonderful husband, S, was diagnosed aged 59 in July 2014 with a 3.4 tumour and pseudo cyst in the tail of his pancreas and several mets to liver - CA19.9 was 21000. Began abraxane and gemcitabine on 22nd August. After 1st cycle spent a week in hospital from side effects so dosage reduced by 20 percent . Finished 3rd cycle in the middle of Nov and CT scan showed pancreas tumour reduced by 15 per cent and largest liver met b…

Any advice please?

Hello, My dad (67) was diagnosed in September with stage 4 PC with mets to the liver. This was picked up on a routine scan for something else and apparently wasn't there six months ago. The oncologist started him on Gemcitabine and cisplastin and he has his sixth one next week followed by a scan. The whole situation plus side effects from the chemo has completely turned over our lives. The fact that there is no hope is very upsetting for us all plus the fear of what lies ahead. The oncologist has said that if the lesions have shrunk then they will continue with the G+C, if it hasn't then they will give him a more aggressive chemo. My parents asked if there would ever …

Hello, My name is Susanna, I have been reading this forum for a couple of weeks but just registered a few days ago. I am so sorry to read that many people are going through the same things and know this awful illness. You are all wonderful people and it is good to know that you give tips, support and advices to each other. My husband is 41 years old and he has inoperable pancreatic cancer metastasis to liver and bones at his spine. I still cannot believe this and feel that life is so unfair with us and all people who have this terrible illness. We have two gorgeous little boys; 3 and a half years old identical twins. For me one of the hardest thing is when they ask…

Hi every one, I wonder if anybody/relative on this forum has experienced or has any knowledge on the following 'side effects' from a fentanyl patch. My mother was diagnosed 18 months ago with cancer to the head of the pancrea with secondaries to the liver and small intestine. We have had our ups and downs and good and bad days. Currently we are having more bad days than good. The pain in my mums back and stomach was an issue but we are now controlling this. She started of am and pm slow release morphine tabs and then went to a fentanyl patch50 mcg and oramorph and paracetamol for break through pain. This was then incereased to 75 mcg and now a 100 mcg patch has been…

Hello, Please forgive my hesitant first posting, I'm sure I will get better at this. Two weeks ago my Darling husband (aged 57) was diagnosed with un-operable Pancreatic Cancer which has spread to his liver. To make matters worse, one of his kidneys was badly blocked, causing him more pain. Last Thursday he had a stent fitted to his left kidney to help it drain. This was a success and seems to be helping with his pain. Tomorrow he starts Chemo. (Gemcitabin & Abraxine)- please excuse any wrong spelling. We will find out more about timings, possible side-effects etc. but I would welcome any help/information anyone has. His care so far has been faultless,…

Hi all, My Mum (73) has been home for 2.5 weeks following a successful radical distal pancreatomy. However since she was discharged we are concerned she is not recovering in the way that she should, in fact going the other way, due to the constant sickness and diarrhoea which is leaving her so weak to the point she's been in bed for the last 4 days. I have a feeling her stomach is in a state of 'shock' after everything but this means that all her meds, Creon, Penicilllin, Codeine, omeprazole etc aren't getting to work properly not to mention the food she is losing every time. The resulting weight loss is a big concern. How can we stop the sickness & diarrho…

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum but not new to PC. My mum was diagnosed with it in 2009, but thankfully it was operable and seemed to be successful. She was put onto a year of chemo just to keep it in check, and has had regular scans since then to monitor the situtation. I guess I was starting to think we were going to be one of the lucky ones that beat PC completely, but a few weeks ago, coming up to mum's regular scan, I started to worry. She wasn't unwell as far as I could tell, but I had a bad feeling and, sure enough, just after my 21st birthday she told my sister and I that the cancer had come back. Now, I'm not sure of all the details, all I know is that i…

Hello all. Here is my story, my dad has recently found out he has pc which has spread to his liver. He is still waiting for a biopsy but we sadly know this is not good. I just cant believe this is happening. Its annoying at the moment as in the last couple of months I have moved about 70 miles away and I dont drive but I am trying to be there as much as I can. Hes got my mum, but her health isnt great either and my brother is nearby at least. My dad has already decided not to accept any chemo offered, which I respect his decision. Last time I was there we talked, talked for a good 3 hours, mostly nice stories but of course about what is going on. Hes told me hes not sc…

Husband newly diagnosed 1 2

Hello, A month ago today my husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that has spread to his liver. He was told he had months rather than years. He is 54 and I am 51 - we thought we had another 20 or 30 years. We have five children, one just finished uni, 2 at uni and twins about to start in September so we were about to find ourselves on our own. We are all absolutely devastated. We live in Manchester so close to Christie hospital, where he has been told he will have Abraxane and Gemcitabine and has been accepted on a clinical trial, which may involve giving Abraxane 24 hours before the Gemcitabine. But we have already had setbacks - first a blood clot in …

I'm going to throw something into the ether for you all to mull over. When you are in a relationship when one of you is terminally ill, are there different rules? Does the ill person get special treatment, are they allowed to do what they like regardless of others? Or do they feel they have to be on their best behaviour so to leave good memories? How much guilt is created when you have a row? It's hard enough coping with PC but relationships still have to be maintained and managed even though the cards on the table have changed. And that is even harder than in more normal times. So for anyone who is struggling I just wanted to say that you're not alone. Years ago whe…

Hi Guys I have been a member of the board since my dad was diagnosed with PC in July 2012, he had a attempted whipple but due to vein involvement the whipple was aborted, they did a biliary bypass and closed him back up. he was then put on chemo which he responded well to and then radiopherapy. They did a CT scan after and was quite surprised to see that his tumour had shrunk a bit, enough that they wanted to retry the whipple, so a year to the day since dad was diagnosed he was wheeled back into theatre where by some miracle the whipple was performed. It's been a year this week since my dads whipple, he has had regular checks and all has been ok, but he had his recent…

I needed to join this forum as myself and the rest of the family have just received the devasting news that my 85 year old Mum has been diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer and the prognosis is about a year. As many of you will know; we are all feeling shellshocked at the moment and it makes it more difficult, that I, the oldest of 2 children (I'm 61) live in London with my husband, my brother (57) lives in Gloucester whilst Mum and my stepfather(67) live in Norfolk near Gt Yarmouth. Mum is a lively 85 who paints, does yoga and has an enquiring intelligent mind. She has been suffering severe abdominal pain since April,& the GP has been treating her for ga…

My Mum

Hi all. My mum has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer which has spread to her liver. She is 77 years old and, apart from a few broken bones, has never been ill in her life. The only time she would touch a 'tablet' was when she had flu, which she hasn't had since they started having flu jabs. She's always been one to 'push through it'. In mid March the weather was lovely and she pulled a garden chair from the shed. Not long after she started having rib/back pain. We all put it down to a pulled muscle and Mum refused (as usual) to see a doctor about it as it would mend in it's own time. But eventually the pain was too much and she started taking ibruprofen for the pa…

Time is ticking!

It has been 3 long weeks since we were told the devastating news that my father in law has inoperable PC. This information was given to us 8 days after he was admitted through A/E with abdominal pain, and was found to have very abnormal liver function tests results and a very high blood sugar level. The usual tests were performed over the next week (ultrasound, MRI and then CT scan). During his time in the hospital he developed obstructive jaundice and had an uncontrollable itch as well as the usual change to bowel habits. We patiently waited for a call following the MDT to discuss any options available. The call came at the end of the following week informing us that he…

Sorry not sure where else to post and cant help thinking we should have done more. Dad lost his battle last month with Pancreatic Cancer. 2 years ago he developed jaundice , after scans ect they realised his bile duct was blocked and put a stent in, over the next year it was like the okey cockey with the stent . each time no sign of cancer . then last June they decided to do the Whipple procedure. The surgeon found a tumour in his pancreas. 6 months of chemo followed as a precaution. May dad was told to come back in 6 months all was okay and nothing showing up on scans. He had had back stiffness from month 3 of chemo.May they investigated and said that he had an infection…

Hi, Just wondering if anyone has experienced a swollen stomach and heartburn? Jim has come home feeling hot & unwell. Along with feeling sick he has a swollen stomach and heartburn. Sounds as if there is a build up of some kind. Has anyone else experienced this? He has gone to try sleep it off and speak to nurses in morning but I just wanted to double check. After all - you guys know as much / more about this cancer than most GP's Xxxx

Is this nearly the end for my dad?

Hi, I'm kinda new to this sort of thing so I'm a bit unsure what to say or do. Took me about half an hour to figure out how to post something haha. I will start with a little bit about mine an my dads life (sorry if it's boring I will be brief). My dad now 65 and me 28. From the age of about 4-5 I lived with my dad an didn't have contact with my mum as she is an alcoholic. Growing up my dad was my idol, I was like his shadow. My dad gave me the best start in life possible teaching me all the life skills I have now! My dad was a very active young at heart (and looking) man doing and working for anybody who needed help. He was always a bit on the larger side but in a health…
