Jamie
Hi, i need some information about nutrition for my mum, she was diagnosed stage 4 inoperable in mid September, she's been losing weight since june and really rapidly since diagnosis. She's now afraid to eat because of the pain and acid reflux she gets. She's also a bit 'difficult' and set in her ways when it comes to eating . She told me her nutritionist said she could eat anything but when I've looked online for suitable diets for people with pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer it generally says otherwise. She's received some food supplements in the form of puddings which she has around 2 of each day. She has also been prescribed creon, but because she suffers chronic pain episodes after a couple of days of eating while using creonn she'll end up in a+e on morphine and paracetamol drips until she stabilises and is scared to eat with it. I also think that the morphine is robbing her appetite, although she says she is hungry and wants to put weight on. I've tried to get her to drink complan but she complains about the texture I'm wondering what other alternatives there are. She's down to 44kgs from 65/70. Sorry this is a bit all over the place, I'm losing my mind at the moment
PCUK Nurse Nicola
Hi Jamie, My Name is Nicci and I am one of the nurses that works on the support line here at Pancreatic Cancer UK. I’m so sorry to hear to about your Mum's diagnosis and all the issues she has been having since. It’s understandable that you are so worried about your Mum losing more weight, it must be awful to see her struggling with eating. Jamie there could be several reasons for your Mum’s weight loss and lack of appetite so I am going to email you directly with some further information with regards to pain and also managing digestive enzymes. Creon can be tricky to get used to but it shouldn’t cause your Mum pain Jamie. I do hope that’s okay.Kindest regards Nicci Pancreatic Cancer Specialist NursePancreatic Cancer UK0808 801 0707email: nurse@pancreaticcancer.org.uk
Vasil
Jamie, is your Mum on chemo? I am asking because my father is in the same situation, diagnosed stage IV PC in July and having lost 20 kg since then. But he is on chemo and I was wondering if chemotherapy might contribute to this weight loss or maybe losing weight is because of the tumour itself.
