Bile duct Stent

Vera Bruty

Recommended Posts

I was diagnosed with malignant pancreatic cancer in January 2020; it was decided that surgery was out of the question at my age (85) and a stent was inserted. I was able to control pain in my lower back and stomach with paracetamol for the first three months, but now I am experiencing considerable discomfort in my back and stomach, especially at night.

I have kept my weight constant by eating a healthy diet. I have been taking Creon capsules with every meal and with snacks, I take laxatives, and I have spaced out the paracetamol to take only 8 in 24 hours. I tried cocodamol for a time but reverted to paracetamol when I seemed to be getting more stomach pain. I also take a 5 mg slow-release morphine tablet twice a day.

How long is the stent likely to last? I am wondering if the stomach pain means that the stent is not working as well as it did initially.

PCUK Nurse Jeni

Hello Vera,

Thank you for your post and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the forums - although of course, not the place you would wish to be visiting.

Vera, the pain you are getting might be because of a couple of different things - I wonder whether you might wish to call us on the support line so that we can have a conversation about this? Its much easier to speak about such things as there may be, as I said, different causes for the increase in pain, and only by speaking with you can we find out more information.

Certainly, there is scope to increase your morphine slow release, as the dose you are on is a small dose.

Regarding the stent, this depends on whether it is a metal or plastic stent - do you know which it is Vera?

Vera, please do give us a call - I would be happy to speak to you - just ask for Jeni. The number to call is in the signature below.

Kindest regards,

Jeni Jones
