Re: Thanks for sharing your experiences . . .

Well you’ve certainly got enough to choose from there! When my first husband died being a bit of a traditionalist at times and having once been a classically trained musician I had a full rendition of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor on the organ only for all his friends to comment “Good choice. ...

Re: Thanks for sharing your experiences . . .

I didn’t actually arrange Rob’s funeral. It was his step brother. They’re all Catholics and I’m a lapsed Methodist (no drinking or gambling was never going to work for me). Rob had given prior warning, having spent his entire life being very rude about the church, that he was going to inflict a full...

Re: Thanks for sharing your experiences . . .

Shortly After my first husband died I had sympathetic noises coming my way about how busy I must be looking after 3 children under the age of 6. But I didn’t feel busy at all because I no longer had to get up every 4 hours day and night to make juices (Gerson therapy) and all the other bits of looki...

Re: Thanks for sharing your experiences . . .

I do think docs don’t always mention everything. When Rob told his surgeon on a 3 month check up that he still couldn’t eat much he replied “well of course I did take half your stomach away” which was the first we’d heard of it. This disease does often in the end spread widely. In the last week we b...

Re: Thanks for sharing your experiences . . .

I couldn’t cope with the horrible breathing which is why I asked for the oxygen. Just do whatever you feel is right Mo. When I got the call to come back straight away to the hospice it was still 11 hours before he passed but these things are unpredictable. You want to be there but you also need rest...

Re: Thanks for sharing your experiences . . .

I think normal behaviour can go out the window. I remember stopping late at night on a deserted motorway slip road because a guy had pretended to break down. He tried to persuade me to give him money in exchange for his watch. I would never have done something so stupid normally. I’m willing you men...

Re: Thanks for sharing your experiences . . .

Darling Mo, a couple of things just in case they are of use. Rob had 2 cats. One was brought in 2 days before he died and the other the day before. I’m not sure Rob was aware of them but they both chose to sit quietly on his bed which was frankly most unlike them. Secondly and this tends to happen m...

Re: Thanks for sharing your experiences . . .

Mo your hotel comment took me back. Rob thought the hospice was a hotel what with all the room service and kept asking me what time we had to check out. I pointed out that I’d expect a better bed if it was a hotel! I do hope you get a bit of sleep tonight. I’m sure you’re both find the hospice reass...

Re: Don’t know where to start

Hi Christine. I think he’s right about the palliative care team. I wouldn’t expect anything over the Bank Holiday weekend. As far as your mum being discharged tomorrow if you have concerns about how she/you will manage you must voice them. It may be that if your mum is still very weak tomorrow they ...
